Dr. Michelle Stephenson is the Chief Patient Care Services Officer & Chief Nurse Executive for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, a 288 bed, free standing children’s hospital located in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Her areas of responsibility include nursing practice in all settings and hospital operations.

Dr. Stephenson is a member of several professional organizations, including the Economic Club of Chicago, Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders, American College of Healthcare Executives, and American Organization of Nurse Executives. She is a frequent speaker at national meetings related to pediatric healthcare, including the Children’s Hospital Association and the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s conference on Magnet Recognition. She also serves on numerous committees, both locally and nationally, impacting the practice of pediatric healthcare and nursing.

Under Dr. Stephenson’s leadership, Lurie Children’s was recognized as the 40th acute care hospital in the country, the first freestanding pediatric hospital, and the first hospital in Illinois, to receive the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence. Lurie Children’s was designated for the third time in 2010 for ANCC Magnet Recognition and is currently preparing to go through the designation process for the fourth time. Less than 1% of hospitals across the US have successfully achieved this designation for three or more times.

Dr. Stephenson holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Rush University, a master’s degree in nursing administration from Indiana University and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Evansville.
