Kathleen Sweitzer is the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary of Trustmark, a company headquartered in Lake Forest, Illinois that provides specialized expertise to help employers solve challenges with insurance, benefits enrollment, third-party administration, and corporate wellness solutions. In this role, she is a member of the C-Suite and leader of the legal, compliance, and government affairs functions, and she oversees the artificial intelligence governance team of cross functional leaders responsible for adopting innovative technologies and addressing the evolving regulatory environment. She also serves as a Trustee of the Trustmark Charitable Foundation, which is focused on health and educational initiatives. Previously, she was the Chief Legal Officer at Maestro Health in Chicago, Illinois where she led the legal, compliance, information security, and transformation teams for the emerging health technology company providing third-party administration, brokerage, clinical care management, cost containment, and other insurance and health solutions. She served as a director at the company and several of its subsidiaries. She started in her role in March 2020, leading through the pandemic, while preparing the company for future sale. As a result of her success, she was recognized in 2021 with the Corporate Counsel Women, Influence and Power Award for Leadership Through Crisis in Healthcare. Ms. Sweitzer has also served in roles as Associate General Counsel at Aon Plc and as a Partner at Tressler LLP, a national law firm providing services to insurers, where she was Co-Chair of the Life and Health practice group. In addition to her for-profit corporate activities, Ms. Sweitzer has been an advocate for providing legal services to the most vulnerable members in her community. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Coordinated Advice and Referral Program for Legal Services (CARPLS), Chicago’s largest provider of legal services to low and moderate-income residents. She has also previously served on the Board of Directors and on the Executive, Strategic Planning, and Program Committees for CARPLS. While at Trustmark, she has developed a partnership with a law firm to offer pro bono opportunities for the members of her team. She began her legal career as an attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii where she represented victims of domestic violence in legal proceedings. Throughout her career, Ms. Sweitzer has focused on improving career success, satisfaction, and advancement opportunities for women. She has served on the Board of the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law, an association whose mission is to benefit the enhancement, recruitment, and promotion of women lawyers at law firms and corporations. As part of the Coalition, she has presented education on topics such as succeeding as an in house attorney and career development. She was also the executive sponsor for the inaugural women’s initiative at Maestro Health. Ms. Sweitzer is a frequent speaker on a variety of subjects including leadership principles, career development, networking, board relations, crisis management, and the impact of regulations on businesses. She received her law degree from California Western School of Law in San Diego and Bachelor of Science with honors from the University of Illinois in Champaign.
