Future Leaders Program Application

Overview:

The Chicago Network (TCN) is an organization of more than 400 members who are the leading women of Chicago’s business, professional, cultural, nonprofit and educational communities. Our membership has a strong and continuing commitment to empowering women.

The Future Leaders Program supports the Network's goal of inspiring the next generation of women leaders by providing outstanding sophomore and junior female college students the opportunity to explore career paths in the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. Participation is limited to 12 students from each of our partner schools,: Dominican University, the University of Illinois at Chicago and St. Xavier University.  

Program participants visit two TCN member organizations from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on separate days during the week of May 8, 2017. Last year’s host companies included Access Community Health Network, The Chicago Tribune, Kohl Children's Museum, McDonald's Corporation, Opportunity International and ULTA Beauty. In past years, our host companies included United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, Leo Burnett, Adler Planetarium, ABC7 Chicago, Exelon, Ernst & Young, the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago. 

During these company visits, participants may receive an overview of the organization and industry, take a tour of the workplace, and discuss the skills, abilities and education necessary for their career path. Company employees may also provide their personal history of how they progressed to their position and/or fostered their career growth, explain what they do and how their role is important to the operations of the organization, and more. Your school will provide transportation from campus to the host companies.

  • Gain an understanding of company functions
  • Ability to translate relevant coursework to a work environment
  • Exposure to workplace etiquette, attire, and practices
  • Understand the skills and responsibilities required in a professional office environment
  • First-hand exposure to the functions, business operations, and activities within distinct professions of a company or industry
  • Gain familiarity with the hiring process
  • Opportunity to build a network of contacts within a variety of industries

    Orientation:

    Prior to the company visits, selected students ARE REQUIRED to participate in an orientation on Tuesday, April 25 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Jenner & Block LLP, 353 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL. Schools will transport selected students to and from the orientation.

     

    The purpose of the orientation is to learn more about the Future Leaders Program, The Chicago Network and to provide students with the opportunity to connect with other program participants, including members of The Chicago Network, representatives from each company, University officials and past participants. Students and representatives from each company will also be supplied with the information, support and resources necessary for successful company visits.

    Who Can Apply:

    Full and part-time college sophomore or junior women at Saint Xavier University, the University of Illinois at Chicago and Dominican University. Past participants are ineligible to apply.

    How to Apply:

     

    The deadline to submit all application materials is Monday, January 23, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Students that have applied will receive a response via email on Monday, March 6, 2017.
